10.05.08 It was perfect
My dad successfully, thankfully married us, after nearly being locked up over an astro-turf dispute with the police (don’t ask). When we got to the part in the ceremony when he asks everyone in attendance to vow to uplift our union, everyone cheered and shouted “we do!” in just the way I wanted them to. When we got to my couple of paltry lines, I nearly blew it by being on the verge of sudden and unexpected tears. I also whispered to him “is this your left hand?” when it came time to put the ring on, I was so overwhelmed I really could not compute left and right. We grinned and laughed and made eyes at each other through the whole thing. I get butterflies when I think about it.
My best friend was there. My mom made everything so beautiful. The Man’s mom was a complete trooper, and helped so much, even with a sprained foot. Weddings are always a good time, and I’m biased, but I do feel like having it at Picnic in the Park, the way we did it, how everything came together, well it just could not have been more enjoyable, more lovely or more special.
Everyone was so complimentary and the atmosphere was festive and relaxed. Complete strangers asked to take their picture with me. Other complete strangers asked my mom to bake their wedding cupcakes or cater their wedding. I pray someone took a picture of her cupcake tower, because it was amazing. Many, many people said they wished their wedding had been like ours or they hoped one day to have a wedding just like it.
We took home a prize from the picnic judges, which at first I thought was just a neat set of plates from the SCAD store but turned out to also include several gift cards to local businesses, as well as a pair of earrings and a handmade scarf which is completely my style and colors. So it was kinda like having all of Savannah give us wedding presents.
We stayed the night at The Mansion on Forsyth which is the swankest place I’ve stayed since I used to work for a dotcom during the 90s boom. It was also the very first hotel The Man and I stayed at together. So if the first night is any indication of our future quality of life, I have no doubt we’ll do very well.

I have to agree that this day turned out perfectly. I am such a lucky and grateful man to have you as my wife. For a couple of years now, I had been hoping that this day would come, and now that dream has come true. I don’t look forward to becoming an old man, but I sure look forward to growing old with you. It is impossible for me to express the way I am constantly overwhelmed with happiness when i think about how we get to spend the rest of our lives together. You are the awesome! I love you.
